Description

Product Description

As Oxford''s flagship American dictionary, the New Oxford American Dictionary sets the standard of excellence for lexicography in this country. With more than 350,000 words, phrases, and senses, hundreds of explanatory notes, and more than a thousand illustrations, this dictionary provides the most comprehensive and accurate coverage of American English available.

The dictionary draws on the two-billion-word Oxford English Corpus and the unrivaled citation files of the world-renowned Oxford English Dictionary to provide the most accurate and richly descriptive picture of American English ever offered in any dictionary. The Third Edition offers a thoroughly updated text, with revisions throughout and approximately 2,000 new words, phrases, and meanings. Many new words relate to fast-moving areas such as computing, technology, current affairs, and ecology, while others have recently entered the popular lexicon. Usage notes have been updated in light of the most recent Corpus evidence, and a completely new in-text feature on Word Trends charts usage for rapidly changing words and phrases such as carbon, mobile, or tweet. In addition, the volume has an attractive, modern new text design that makes entries easier to read and find.

One of the hallmarks of the New Oxford American Dictionary is the way it reflects the living language. Unlike in more traditional dictionaries, where meanings are ordered chronologically according to the history of the language, each entry plainly shows the principal meaning or meanings of the word, organized by importance in today''s English. Thus readers can be confident that the first definition they see is the one most likely to be used by people today, and is not a sense that has been obsolete for two centuries.

Offering clear, authoritative, and precise information, with the in-depth and up-to-date coverage that users need and expect, the New Oxford American Dictionary is the benchmark by which all other American dictionaries are measured.

Review

"It runs more than 2,000 pages and weighs upward of 800 pounds, so will need one forklift or three sumo wrestlers to hoist it, but you will love this gorilla once you get to know it."--James Kilpatrick, "Writers Life"

"Includes some unique and useful extras."-- School Library Journal Curriculum Connections

" NOAD is an eminently usable dictionary with an attractive layout; clear, crisp illustrations; usage guidance; and synonyms with connotations. Sure to be everyone''s favorite dictionary! Summing up: Essential."-- Choice

"More current than its closest rival in size. This is a ''buy.''"-- Booklist STARRED REVIEW

"Erudite, accessible. If you''re looking for a desk dictionary that covers the spectrum of American English, with a fair quantity of encyclopedic information thrown in, you could do a lot worse." -- World Wide Words

Reviews of the previous edition: "The gold standard of American dictionaries."-- The Providence Journal

"With its unique approach to language, this is easy to use and provides clear, well-written definitions. "-- Library Journal.

"Oxford has always been so good at dictionaries, and lexicographical publishing needs a boost after Random House suddenly abandoned the field. I''d give the New Oxford American Dictionary to a person looking for a quick answer."--William Safire, The New York Times.

"In both definitions & pronunciations the dictionary emphasizes American English. This is a useful quick-reference type of dictionary."-- Houston Chronicle

" The New Oxford American Dictionary offers the most dependable reference information."-- Seattle Times.

"Utilizing the latest techniques for analyzing word usage and meaning, the editors have compiled more than 250,000 definitions and 9000 biographical and geographical entries into an accessible resource with a distinctly American voice. An understated presentation exuding precision and authority, it is an essential tool."-- School Library Journal [Starred Review]

"One of the best American-English dictionaries to come out in several years. This is a handy and not overly expensive dictionary to have on hand at the reference desk of academic and public libraries."-- American Reference Book Annual 2002

"Its editor, Erin McKean, is, according to American newspaper reports, the hippest and sexiest lexicographer around. It''s also the first such work... with an electronic edition accessible on the road, since it can be downloaded to your Palm, Blackberry, or Windows mobile device."-- World Wide Words

"Unrivaled etymological information revealing fascinating word histories."-- Tampa Tribune

"A labor of love and an unparalelled gift to writers and readers worldwide, the New Oxford American Dictionary should be on the reference shelf of every library." - Library Journal

One of the earlier reviewers stated that this dictionary acts like it "owns the place." I understand where that is coming from.

Not only does mine act like it owns my place, when I got it, and it got acclimated to my house, it started pouting, whining, moaning, throwing fits, temper tantrums, and it wouldn''t stop until I got it a furniture quality dictionary stand. Also from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Design-Toscano-Thomas-Aquinas-Bookstand/dp/B00269EOS2/

Then and only then was it content. Until it turns 16 and starts hitting me up for a car.

Of course, this stand gives me plenty of room to keep this book''s steady girlfriend, the Oxford American Writer''s Thesaurus, underneath it.

Really, all jokes aside, if and when you buy and receive this tome, the first thing that will jump out at you is its size. While its listed dimensions, 9 x 2.5 x 11.5, are the truth, those actually underestimate how big the dictionary looks when it''s in front of your face. You could take out a ruler and estimate those dimensions in front of you if you don''t have the dictionary, but the book "in the flesh" actually seems much bigger, even though it''s actually not.

By comparison, the Webster''s Third New International Dictionary, the ne plus ultra of unabridged American English dictionaries, is only 81% larger in three-dimenson volume. "Only 81%," I say, because just about everyone has seen W3NID, and knows how Baluchitherian it is. Also by comparison, the Merriam-Webster Collegiate, 11th Edition, which is in the same class and price point range and language class (American English) as this Oxford, and is said to be the best selling American English dictionary in the just-slightly-less-than-unabridged category, the Oxford is 70% larger in volume than it. In fact, MWC11 is only slightly more voluminus that the the Oxford Theasurus.

Once you get over the physical size, then there''s the matter of weight. Seven pounds, officially, but if it weighs only seven pounds, then I weigh only seven pounds. Of course, I don''t weigh seven pounds, I''m the sort that can gain seven pounds just by looking at a doughnut. By comparison and officially, W3NID is 12.5 pounds, and MWC11 is 3.8 pounds.

Long and short: It''s big, and heavy, which means it deserves a quality stand, just to support it and show it off.

Now, as for contents, Oxford gives me that sort of authoritative and official feeling of lexicography that I don''t get from M-W or American Heritage (Houghton-Mifflin), which makes sense, because Oxford University is where our language pretty much officially lives. Another thing is that Oxford doesn''t give me the sense that it''s playing the kind of slick diss sneak diss political games with lexicography that M-W and AH are, even though Oxford does it to some extent.

To conclude: New Oxford American Dictionary 3rd Edition is now in direct competition with my cat over who has control of my house.

I love this dictionary. In my opinion, it''s a lot better than my Merriam Webster''s dictionary because it has a lot more words. I was even able to find the word mumpsimus in there. That wasn''t in my previous dictionary. Also, the layout of the words is extremely organized. I''m able to find words in as little as a few seconds. Upon further discovery, there are pictures of dinasours and the different names of what they are. I also like the amendments, deceleration of independence, and the supreme court cases. Overall, it''s a lot more superior than my last dictionary. I''ve been using it everyday and greatly expanding my vocabulary. I even got the thesaurus with it as well. The best money I''ve spent.

Over a year ago I purchased this dictionary along with the Oxford American Writer''s Thesaurus, 3rd ed. Both full price at the time. I chose to purchase the dictionary from Amazon, rather than directly from OUP in order to take advantage of Prime Shipping. A couple of months ago, I needed to look up a word beginning with "a". To my great dismay, I discovered that my wonderful dictionary had a major printing error. The pages 39 through 70 (in "A" section) were either mangled or missing entirely. I contacted the customer service department for OUP and received only automated responses. The exception, was a response asking me if I purchased the dictionary from OUP. After that, no further response. I even sent photos of the section with machine-ripped or missing pages. I did not request a replacement dictionary, only photocopies of the 30-plus missing pages. Surely OUP would stand behind it''s products?!
I plan to donate this dictionary with a note of the missing pages. Will purchase another publisher''s equally fine dictionary from my local bookstore where I can inspect it before it leaves the store.

Sure, you can use the Internet (actually you are using the world wide web, a program that sits on top of the infrastructure of the Internet) to find a definition of a word, but so what? The issue with online dictionaries is that they only provide you for information on ''known item'' searches (apologize for the use of quotes, I am well aware you are to use italics to emphasize things in writing but cannot figure out how to within the confines of Amazon). Paper dictionaries (or any documentation in physical format) allows for the possibility of serendipitous discovery, that is finding things that you did not know existed. Let us say that you are a supervisor of people and one of your underlings tells you that you are being ''obtuse.'' Using the nifty paper dictionary you not only find out the level of esteem your employees have for you, but also discover other fun words; such as ''obtusely'' or ''obtusity.''

But really this is just a damn good dictionary.

Though I love this dictionary and its contents and its layout, I had a co-worker this afternoon ask for a dictionary definition of the word "conclusory." I thumbed through my Oxford American (3rd Ed.) while my neighbor simultaneously thumbed through her Merriam-Webster College Dictionary (4th Ed.) and, lo and behold, she had the definition -- but my Oxford did not! I was devastated and embarrassed and humiliated. The Oxford Dictionary should be the absolute source of our language and its definitions. But, there it wasn''t. In black and white -- concise, conclave, conclude, conclusion, conclusive -- and then ... *drumroll* ... concoct. "Conclusory" should have been right there in between conclusive and concoct. Now I just want to curl up in a ball, hide under my desk, and disappear.

Having just spent a small fortune updating my favorite quick-reference for American English grammar, punctuation and usage, I was delighted and surprised to open the box and find that this bargain-priced scholarly masterpiece is HUGE and that the text is clear, easily readable and offers authoritative definitions with American spellings and modern examples of usage, without the etymological fuss that can bog one down when using the unwieldy two-volume Compact Oxford English Dictionary with its microscopic print and included magnifying glass. Don''t misunderstand what I''m saying. If you can afford the Compact OED and revel (as I do) in chasing down the origins of words at times, you must either subscribe to or purchase the OED, but if you are seeking an over-sized, thorough and comprehensive desktop dictionary of American English that provides quick and useful definitions and sample sentences so that you can look up a word and get back to your writing or editing, this third edition of NOAD is a treasure you must add to your collection. Buy it before someone classifies it as a "textbook" and quadruples the price!

I have owned many fine Dictionaries during my lifetime. Most of them, in the course of time, went out of business for any variety of reasons. I am a writer and one who loves the English language almost to the point of obsession. THIS was purchased as the "final" Dictionary for my lifetime so I needed the best available. I tracked down my most respected English Teacher who was oddly still alive and alert. This is the only one he recommended. As always .. he was right. No disappointment whatsoever.
