Product Description

"Truman''s novels of Washington will continue to entertain both mystery and Washington buffs." —Washington Post

An international art scandal turns deadly in this fourth book in Margaret Truman''s nationally bestselling Capital Crimes series

Dr. Lewis Tunney, a brilliant historian who had stumbled onto an international art scandal, was brutally murdered in front of two hundred guests at an elegant party at the Smithsonian. When his fiancée, Heather McBean, flies in from Scotland to learn more, Mac Hanrahan, the captain in charge of the case, takes a heated interest in her.

And when two more murders are committed, Hanrahan has reason to worry about Heather''s sleuthing. But Heather is stubborn and insists on going her own way—right into the arms of a killer . . .

I re-read this after about 30 years, and it held up. I had kept it because it has some of my favorite locations - Edinburgh Castle (although she refers to "Princess" Street), the National Gallery of Art (and its beautiful fountain), the museums that make up the Smithsonian, the First Ladies Exhibit, Foucault''s Pendulum...
However, I wondered why she had to describe Mac, her police captain as so grumpy and unkempt, and then present him as a potential love interest, and I agree with other reviewers that Heather made too many bad decisions and was too stupid to be allowed to wander around by herself. But I was glad that Truman showed her as respectful of her murdered fiance''s memory and didn''t just jump into bed with Mac, since the loss was so recent and she was supposed to be devastated by the loss.
The author wrote in a different, politically incorrect time, but it was an enjoyable page-turner.

This was my first MARGARET Truman but I want to read more. I got into the book right away and I really liked the characters. The story held my interest all the way through. I felt like a book like this may have been one influence on Dan Brown, as it had crime wrapped around an object of historical significance.

Margaret Truman is truly a great author. Because she is the daughter of President Harry Truman, this makes for fascinating reading. Although she is writing fiction, I wonder how much she writes is based on the truth. Her books are very descriptive of all locations she writes about and, therefore, are very educational.

Murder, theft, and suspicious behavior throughout this tale.
A complicated plot was not easily entangled. Theft and murder were obvious but why and how and who was involved was not easily determined.
