To let you know why I think you might want to read this book, let me sum up what I learned from it, and how its lessons have affected me over the last few weeks.

First, a little background: Without getting into detail, I''ve struggled with getting happiness in my life for a large number of years. I chased the things that I thought would make me happy, to include money, material items, business success, romantic companionships, and even short but repeated dives into spiritual exploration. None of what I found seemed to deliver the happiness I was looking for. (Early in this book the author tells a similar story. I connected with that.)

Upon reading this book, however, it''s like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders (or more accurately my mind), and I can say (for the last few weeks at least) I feel a great deal more happiness about life than I ever have before.

So why did this book affect me so greatly? I think the magic of this book (over all the others I''ve read) is connected with the fact it showed me how my own mind worked. That''s something no other book has ever done for me. It explained why my mind does what it does, using science and funny/interesting stories to do so, and it explained how my mind creates the things that steal my happiness. Then it proceeded to tell me how I can tweak some things in my mind to get my mind to create more happiness for me. Early in the book, the author used a great Captain Obvious mechanism to tell me that my happiness always comes from within my own mind (when it comes), and that all the stuff that inhibits my happiness comes from within my own mind also. I never thought about it like that. And after I read about how it all worked, everything about my personal happiness potential became so clear.

From there, after being presented the details of how this works in my own mind, like he was looking into my head in real time and telling me how it all worked as I saw it working, I started seeing my mind in a way that indeed put me into the control room of my mind (explained in the book) just like the author promised, and I was able to start to take control of my mind like I have never experienced before.

There''s a bit of science that explains why the brain is actually wired to help you get into this same space. I can''t really explain it as well as the author, but I will testify that it works, or has for the last few weeks, and seems to be getting stronger as I go along.

Here are the changes I''ve experienced in the last few weeks: Stuff at work doesn''t bug me anymore. Stuff at home doesn''t bug me anymore. Things online and in the news don''t bother me anymore. My relationship with my wife has sparked (in multiple ways), and my teenagers are much easier to deal with (I can now see into their minds too which is helping me understand them). I think I''m generally more pleasurable to be around, because people are asking me what I''ve changed and where my new sense of humor is coming from. (I''ve always had it. I guess I just never felt like sharing openly.) I''ve even dumped 5 pounds because maybe I''m not stress eating as much? I attribute all of these changes to the fact I can now see my mind working and understand why it was trying to create all that negative noise for me. I never knew understanding my own mind could change my life this much. If this lasts, I will be forever grateful.

If you''re on the fence, you should read this book. Over the last few weeks, because of the simple little shift of being able to see my mind like I never have before, my life has totally changed. In the book the author teases a Volume II, which kinda pissed me off at the time (you want me to read TWO books now?), but now I can''t wait to read it because of what this book has provided me to be able to reduce the inner noise that I was never able to put my finger on, but which this author explains fully, and in plain terms that are easy for me to understand. So if there''s more, I wanna know.

Well done. Well written. Very relatable. I can''t recommend this book highly enough.

Just read it. It is filled with brilliant ways to improve your life and OUR WORLD. I wish everyone could have these insights and use them. There is ancient wisdom to ponder mixed with interesting stories and practical ways from modern science to make your everyday life experience BETTER. They all make sense and many are immediately implementable. I am now 65 and I would give near anything to have had the GEMS in this book 40 years ago. I recommend reading it very carefully from the beginning all the way through without skipping ahead because you need all of the information in the order it is presented and you will benefit much more if you read it all carefully. I think it would’ve dramatically changed and improved my life years ago but it can help me now at 65 it is just a matter of absorbing the very insightful ideas and concepts. I am going to read volume two without a doubt but right now I’m reviewing and studying the ideas in volume one and trying to put them into the fabric of my every day life HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I purchased Volume 1 of this series after the hearing the author being interviewed on one of my favorite podcasts and decided to read it on vacation. Halfway through Volume 1, I ordered Volume 2.

Wow! Both books are a great blend of science, personal anecdotes and stories, and easy reads (the author even makes the science sections easy to understand). He is not kidding in Volume 1 in the claim that you will finish the book with an immediate, easy to apply "tool" to change your emotions at will. I''ve already used it to much success on vacation with my husband''s family! ha ha

Seriously, though, I highly recommend both books and can see why the author broke them up into two volumes. Volume 2 focuses on meditation and stories about enlightenment and the science behind it. My take away is that who "I am" is neither my mind nor my body which is extremely comforting because I realize I can stop obsessing over both without losing the essence of who I truly am.

Seriously, at least download a sample of Volume 1 to dip your toe in the mind hacking waters. You will not be disappointed.

Oh, and definitely read them in order. Volume 2 does take a few chapters to recap the tools in Volume 1 but I don''t think I would''ve fully grasped the tools had I not read Volume 1 in its entirety first.

I''m sorry I really tried to digest what I would term as delusional. Yeah I know that''s a very strong word but months after reading both books is the only explanation that I could come to after re-reading Vol. 2.
I don''t doubt the author means well and likely really believes is what he "imagined" but that just it .... imagined.

After listening and following Sean''s ideas, I put some of my own ideas together:

Dualism and Monism.

Each of these concepts can be seen from different points of view, from the physicality of the brain, and from intangible awareness.

The entire physical set is a hypothetical construct of the brain. It is basically a movie of the past except it is largely a fiction.

Dualism is a basic definition of our intangible awareness of the physical reality. Both dualism and monism are significant and permanent.

Monism is a fundamental description of the nature of existence, where consciousness precedes all else. Consciousness has existed forever.

Non-locality is also a fundamental aspect of existence. It is always available, such as seeing one''s self woven into the entire physicality.

Dualism can be seen as the freedom which observers have to choose their points of view, to see from both physicality and intangibility.

Both of these ways of observing reality exist as an eternal yin-yang, no beginning, no ending, just a free choice of how to observe.

There are infinite sets of how to observe and how to define observations, for example, I can choose to be a single, physical person.

I can view myself as a single person from the point of view of a single person, I can do this without permission from anyone else.

I can also see my self as the entire set of physicality, being observed by my own eternal, infinite, intangible awareness of life.

There are an infinite set of choices within these extremes which are always available and which define our freedom to choose.

The right balance between theory and practice is hard to find. In Mind Hacking Happiness v1, Sean has found it. Another way to put it is the balance between DESCRIPTION and PRESCRIPTION. There is just enough DESCRIPTION of our mental processes, the science behind them, and the ways they impact our lives. This level of description is a minimum effective dose to provide the logical framework to understand the PRESCRIPTION sections of the book.

Here we get the goodies. The Mind Hacks themselves. These tools are given in a clear and useful manner. I''ve already started to see myself using some of the language of the book to think about my own emotions using the "Equation Of Emotion". I''m looking forward to rereading parts of the book and cataloging the hacks in a cheat sheet to remind myself of the options I have.

Thanks for a well-researched gift of a book.

In short, it doesn''t work. Disappointing. The author made it sound like his advice would be revolutionary. It is not.

If you''re interested in reading everything you can on Enlightenment then I guess I would recommend this book. It does drag on a bit and should be edited down so that there doesn''t have to be two volumes. There are a lot more books out there that would be more helpful for reaching enlightenment, such as those form Adyashanti, but this book does do a good job in looking at this subject from a more scientific viewpoint. It''s always nice to be able to gleam a few more tidbits of knowledge from a book, just not too fun when it drags on a bit too long though.
