At first blush, you wonder whether or not another highly productive and successful individual will preach utterly unapproachable tips for life that feel impractical or out of reach. Not so, with this book. As I read it, I appreciated the wisdom and very accessible (that''s code that it is addressed for real people, not just super heroes!). The examples that the author provides are powerful and thought-provoking. And more happily for this busy parent, this was a straight-forward, easy to follow book that had its salient points easily digestible rather than buried in pages of unnecessary verbiage. Hurrah! An author who appreciates and values her audience. That is refreshing and and felt like she really appreciates her readers.

I was also moved by the author''s description of sea kayaking and experiences at the age of 17 in Outward Bounds. It resonated with me, and further reminded me of the beneficial powers of those kinds of experiences, especially the deeper self-reliance one gains from those experiences. Being alone with my thoughts for hundreds of miles of trails remained a stabilizing force in my life, especially in the tumult of college and my 20s. Little kernels like this are great reminders for our own lives and things to help facilitate for our kids, too.

Take a few hours, get a a quick life make-over and refresh on some core philosophies for approaching your work and personal life; you''ll be the better for it. Better yet, pair it with a good glass of wine and enjoy it. I recommend this book.

Chicago author Alyssa Rapp is a lecturer in management at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago’s Booth Business School, and in addition to teaching she is CEO of Surgical Solutions, founder of AJR Ventures, Bottlenotes, Inc, serves on the board of the Illinois Housing Development Authority, and has been honored as a notable and significant entrepreneur. Her books include GUIDE TO WINE and now LEADERSHIP LIFE & HACKS.

One of the many reasons Alyssa’s book of insights works so well is her fine sense of humor and lightness that pervade the pages of this generously helpful book. For example, in her author’s note she provides a definition of the word “hack’ (‘a cutting instrument’) and her choice of use for the title – ‘For the nest 187 pages, “hacks” should be thought of as shortcuts, work-arounds, or work-throughs. Each chapter’s hacks are summarized up front, in case all you have time for are the hacks themselves and no the narrative behind them. One must practice what one preaches… I’m hoping at least one of these one hundred Life & Leadership Hacks proves as helpful to you in driving greater efficiency and impact in your life as they do in mine.’ The degree of caring and friendly communication allows her suggestions and insights to apply to us all.

Having been described by friends as ‘blunt but polite, funny yet serious, tough and nurturing,’ Alyssa provides her arrival at the junction that ultimately resulted in this book: ‘I started looking for ways to ‘hack the system’ as a mom, wife, entrepreneur, and executive. By hack I mean I was seeking high-impact strategies that would help me work more efficiently, achieve better outcomes, and more successfully balance my personal and professional lives.’

And from this inviting and accessible opening, this book of 100 hacks is a pleasure to read, a source of viable ways to change barriers to entrances, and many ideas and concepts thoroughly explained by means of Alyssa’s own encounters and experiences. But most important of all, this is major advice offered in a manner that makes her insights negotiable – and applicable. Very highly recommended – for business and family life. Grady Harp, January 20

I like so much books that give you the opportunity to develop and improve yourself. I have read quite a lot of such books and I have my own idea of a good book. Recently I finished reading Leadership And Life Hacks and I had a positive impression. I think that the author clearly understands the topic about which she writes. I liked the personal author’s approach there. I read with pleasure, and it was not hard for me. In some places, I could even catch the author’s humor. This book can be your business helper. If you have any problems just find the "hack" and solve it easily. If you are a manager or director, then I think the advice of the author will not be superfluous for you. I advise you to get the book because it is worth your free time. I think you can learn something new.

This book is called “Leadership and Life Hacks - Insights from a Mom, Wife, Entrepreneur & Executive” by Alyssa Rapp.. I find the Title quite intriguing- the Leadership hacks (so-called) precede the Life Hacks, and this is the order of the book. However in the sub-title the life hacks platform of the author as Mom and wife precede leadership experiences. a subtitle reversal. “So what “, you say; and you might argue that what’s important are the principles the author presents to us derived from her experiences as both mother and executive.
I sense in this book a certain sensitivity which is not usual in books of this genre. It would to me be interesting to determine to what extent the nurturing, caring role of mother and wife influenced the leadership principles the author avows or the way the stories were told. There is not much new here, but what is here is emphasized in a more tempered way, and supported gratefully by the author. There is for example no hard nosed screaming at the reader to “wake up do it now” or any implication of “take it or leave it”.. The author presents us with a number of so-called hacks - concerning Leadership; Teaching; and Home Life. She supports these with her history of adjustments at work or home. She freely pays tributes to diverse mentors and mentees - people she interacted with in achieving successes both at transitioning a large business and at home. I like the guideline saying “Romance your customers” from which other customer-related and be-friendly principles seem to have been derived. I quickly resonated with this having been so many times a victim of the dreaded “a representative will be with you shortly” said 10 times in the 10-15 minutes that I am on the phone. And she makes a well sought plea for more-women, and their more-equal involvement in business.
The book is set out in a way that might meet the author’s advice to read the book as you wish - the hacks are set out in a bundle and then expanded by stories of the author’s experiences. I liked that idea because it allows the reader to read and understand the hacks in their individual contexts, perhaps without saying under their breaths that the author was lucky to have ingenuity staff, and mentors in her life. Actually it might be useful to everyone if the principles provided were put altogether in their numbered form as a pocket study booklet.
All of this leads to the question: why ‘hacks”? The author tells us the she is not speaking of hack as ‘cut with rough or heavy blows”; bit more so as “shortcuts, workarounds or workthroughs”. I liked that and I wish she could continue to use these words for that is indeed what the principles are, or find a single stronger word than ‘tips’. The reason is that as I absorbed some of what she was presenting as guidelines, I could not help thinking of the breadth and scope of hacking in the current hi-tech industry and in our societies today. The explanation notwithstanding, my thinking was that the word was misplaced in the ethics and people integration of this book.

Leadership And Life Hacks: Insights From A Mom, Wife, Entrepreneur & Executive by Alyssa Rapp is a very informative book that gives the reader information that can make their business more successful, or other parts of their life less hectic and more enjoyable. There are several big ideas in this read. The one that was most important to me was the idea of giving your project, whatever it may be, all of the attention and care that you can in order to make it successful. Too often we are distracted by other things in life, get interested in another topic, or just get bored with what we are doing and then walk away from it. This book explains that if you are going to be successful, you must commit 100% to something and then stay with it until the end.
The 4 star rating is because, while this is a very good read with lots of good information, I do not feel that it really offers anything new. I have read other books in this genre and much of what is here is the same as what I found in other places. Again, they are good tips and very useful, but I was hoping for something new here. With that said, this is a great read with good info for just about anyone. People who are running a business can find things here that will help, or if you are just looking for things you can do at home to free up time and energy. The book is put together very well and the read moves well from one topic to the next. Good job to the author. I will be on the look out for more books by her.

Balancing work and family is one of the hardest possible things to do. That is why I’m always down to read a book willing to offer me some hacks to help make things a bit easier. Unfortunately, most of the books I find offer tips that are so obvious that most people have been doing them for years. Then, there are the books that offer tips that aren’t feasible for those of us that can’t afford a full-time nanny. This book was not the case in either sense. All of the hacks and stories are fun and feasible. I loved the author’s sense of humor too, as it made the book very quick to get through. I will definitely be utilizing many of the tips in this book and going back to reread a few of the tips that intrigued me. I’d recommend to anyone hoping to make life a little less stressful while balancing kids, the house, and work.

This book is a great guide for anyone looking to figure out the best ways to be the most efficient at work and/or at home. Alyssa has a lot of great tips for how to be a great leader at work and how to best connect with your employees and peers. I really liked the leadership hacks: find ways to make your team want to come to the office and find ways to make your team want to stay at the office. Alyssa had some good suggestions for how leaders could accomplish both these hacks and I feel a lot of companies would benefit from following these suggestions. Alyssa also has life hacks for achieving work/life balance and taking care of yourself. I really could relate to these life hacks: move your body, calm your mind & you must take care of yourself before you can take care of other people. I think a lot of us are guilty of not following that last one. Alyssa also writes about hacks that you can use with your kids and your spouse/partner. I especially loved the one about reading to your children at bedtime as I also try to follow that but not always successful. This book is very helpful for anyone looking for tips on how to succeed at work, at home, or at both.
