Batgirl''s Back!

Three years ago, Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl, nearly lost her life when the Joker shot her through the spine. Barbara survived, but her injuries were severe—complete loss of mobility from the waist down.

She adjusted to life using a wheelchair, but she never quite adjusted to being out of the fight. Though her injuries didn’t stop her from helping the Bat-Family in other ways, Batgirl was retired.

Now, a new experimental treatment has done the impossible— restored her ability to walk. With her body healed, Babs is back in the cowl. But as she struggles with her own PTSD and other heroes who now treat her like glass, Barbara still has a long way to go to feel like Batgirl again.

Collecting Gail Simone’s celebrated New 52 run in one volume for the first time, Batgirl Returns Omnibus contains stories from Batgirl #0-34, Young Romance: The New 52 Valentine’s Day Special #1, Batgirl Annual #1-2, Batman: The Dark Knight #23.1, and Batgirl: Futures End #1.

3.5 for content, rounded down because the edition has some major flaws.

I''ve been Gail Simone Curious for years. She has very dedicated fans, but every time I picked up a random issue of one of her books, I was unimpressed. Because this omnibus is so cheap on Amazon, I decided to go for it. I''m not really a Batfan, but I do like Babs (And Cassie! That''s the Batgirl omnibus I REALLY want, DC!).

And... it''s okay. The villains are terrible, just random collections of tics, prone to dropping obvious clues to their identities that Batgirl can "investigate." (Insert 1-2 panels of Babs sitting at a computer.) They rarely have understandable motivations or goals. The saving grace is the characterization of Barbara herself and some of her supporting cast, particularly Ricky and Alysia. Knightfall is an exception in regards to both motivation and goals, but the resolution of her story is lame.

It''s a decent run, though, worth a look. I just wish Simone had spent more time with the characters and less with the villain of the month. The best story by far is the three part "Batgirl Wanted," which is smart and character driven.

The real problem is the edition. There is no table of contents and cover art is reproduced without text, so you have no idea where you are, or even if you''re dipping into a different series or event. The event crossovers are terrible. There are no text pages filling in the missing links. At one point Barbara decides she isn''t worthy of the batsuit, but an issue later it''s back. A major Joker story gets interrupted by a few random issues off topic, then gets picked back up only to end on a huge cliffhanger. "For the whole story read Batman: Death of the Family!" ARE YOU KIDDING ME, DC? (I did but it and read it. It was actually very good. I''m still mad, though). I would rather have had the last chapter of that story than the one-off event issues here, like the not-so-good Gothtopia or the villain issue.

Actually, let''s talk about that one for a second, because it''s the low point of the omnibus: As part of what I assume was probably part of a line-wide Month of Villains or something, we get an issue focused on the Ventriloquist. It''s painfully obvious, badly written, and just distasteful. So, so, bad. And just dropped in like a turd in a trick or treat basket, no explanation, no follow up, nothing.

Dedicated DC readers will probably be more forgiving of the holes, but for new readers it''s kind of a mess. As the character''s big relaunch it''s iffy - but that''s already in the past and there have been at least two new iterations of the character since this.

Decent, not essential.

Gale Simone is an excellent writer. She knows the character of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. Having written Birds of prey. (Would love to see her birds of prey run in an ominous collection.) Batgirl was also groundbreaking. With Alex, Barbara’s roommate who is transgender. The first transgendered character in a mainstream comic book. The upcoming Batgirl film is based on Gale’s run.

Simone has a perfect grasp of what it’s like to recover from PTSD and the struggles of regaining physical mobility: Barbara constantly struggles through the shame of her trauma and that bleeds in to her decision to accept an experimental surgery to restore sensation to her legs. It isn’t a straight road, but Barbara Gordon is a resilient character, and the most resilient Batgirl by far, mentally and physically. As such, Barbara grapples with that in her civilian life and as Batgirl, but what that equates to is a wonderfully empathetic heroine. She’s a heroine who uses her pain and her struggles to project the worst of what ‘could happen’ to those she wants to protect, and as such it fuels her to come out victorious no matter what.

The return of Barbara Gordon to the role of Batgirl--for me-- was one of the best things in the New 52. While the relaunch had hit and miss titles, this was easily one of the better runs... and the last time Babs/ Batgirl will have a decent run, so enjoy this for what it is. The binding is decent, could of been a touch better considering its smaller size. Good artwork and well written. Collects the entire Simone run, yet is missing the Batman Death of the Family follow up issue that finished the crossover event. Not a deal breaker but thought it worth mentioning. One gripe I will have is this is another Omni DC decided to have no Table of Contents listing the issues. For the size of the book, I think it should be a must.. Anyways, I own the hardcovers of this run but loved it enough that I wanted this in Omni form. Great price and next days shipping, awesome service.
