Review

"One of the best comic stories ever told."-- Washington Examiner

"With art that looks like a hybrid of Norman Rockwell and Jack Kirby, artist Ross has become the preeminent painter of superheroes of his generation."-- Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Mark Waid, a  New York Times best-selling author, has written a wider variety of well-known comics characters than any other American comics author, from Superman to the Justice League to Spider-Man to Archie and hundreds of others. His award-winning graphic novel with artist Alex Ross, Kingdom Come, is one of the best-selling comics collections of all time.

Alex Ross first came to prominence as the illustrator of Marvel’s before producing the award-winning Kingdom Come.  With a graphic novel for Vertigo ( Uncle Sam), several projects for Marvel Comics, and six oversized graphic novels starring DC''s iconic heroes (collected in The World''s Greatest Heroes), the top-selling Justice series and more, he continues to bring comics to a broader audience. In 2003, Ross was the subject of a retrospective of his work for DC Comics, Mythology (Pantheon Books), written and designed by Chip Kidd.

I actually went to art school in Chicago with Alex Ross. We shared a couple of classes together. I remember a very fun Batman party my girlfriend and I went to (we came as ''Sound Effects'') and Alex showed up as the Joker. He was with us too when a group of us went to the premier of Tim Burton''s Batman movie.

Even then his artwork was already better than everyone else. I was always an excellent draftsman but Alex was simply on another level. What impresses me most however is that for as good as he was then his artwork has grown so superbly over the years. And yet, his ''style'' remains demonstrably ''Alex''.

I took a step away from art and comics for a couple decades and when I came back, I saw the cover for Absolute Kingdom Come. I wasn''t absolutely sure it was him at first. The art was familiar but somehow ''more'' if that makes any sense. Still, my first impression was that it looked an awful lot like something he would do. I remember in school how much I loved the way he rendered chrome effects. He loved doing paintings of European Knights. Thinking on it now maybe it was his way of perfecting the effect and not so much a love of knights. I mean, all the shiny bits of the armor is a great practice field. Anyway, I saw that same signature style in Kingdom Come. So when I found his name on the credits, I wasn''t totally surprised.

I''m not sure if this is technically a review of the book but I wanted to express an appreciation of Alex''s work from a different angle. As a former artist and from someone who knew his work back then, I hope this little tidbit adds to your appreciation of his art.

Look on any list of best DC Elsewhere stories and Kingdom Come will always be at, or near, the top. In fact, it’s considered one of the best DC stories regardless of whether the stories are within or outside of canon. I wrote a whole long review on the story in Kingdom Come for the Deluxe Edition where I praised it profusely so I won’t revisit it today. Suffice to say, I’ve now bought the story three times including the Deluxe Edition and paperback so you can believe I really enjoy it.

I get a little confused but it looks like an Absolute Kingdom Come was released in 2006, then rereleased in 2012 and now this is the third printing. The 2006/2012 versions have an excellent 4.5-star average review on Amazon but the one complaint I saw was that the images looked “grainy”. The only review thus far of this “New Edition” has also complained about the fuzziness of the images. The complaints were enough that I shied away from buying the original Absolute Edition, but I can tell you these images are as they are intended to be. Paint is a different medium than pen and ink and lacks a certain crispness but that’s just the nature of the art. Alex Ross paintings might not have the detail of a museum piece but he was cranking out these gorgeous paintings at a comic artist pace. Do not be fooled into thinking that DC failed in the reproduction. I felt that the Deluxe Edition was pretty much on par with the paperback version in terms of image quality, but the Absolute Edition looks like a definite upgrade. It’s not an amazing difference but when I hold the images side by side the Absolute Edition does come out on top, as it should given the price.

The Absolute and Deluxe Editions have exactly the same page count at 344 so I’m assuming the content is the same although I’m too lazy to confirm it. The 2012 Absolute Kingdom Come had 340 pages but I have no idea what accounts for the four-page disparity. The cover art on Amazon is from the slipcase and the actual book looks almost exactly like the other Absolute Kingdom Come editions. I certainly wouldn’t pick this one up from an investment standpoint since DC seems to be releasing it over and over again. As a comic fan, more than a collector, I completely agree with making it available to as many people as possible.

Kingdome Come is one of those rare comic stories that transcends comics. Not everything Mark Waid produces is magnificent but it seemed like he recognized that this one was going to be historical because he really goes out of his way to make the story feel epic. Perhaps he was inspired by getting to work with Alex Ross. This is truly a collaboration of artist and writer that works perfectly and I’m glad to own the finest edition in existence.

My absolute favorite graphic novel of all time, entering a new print run, what''s more to like?

Picking this up for the first time after this was shipped to my office I noticed one thing that jumped out at me right away, something I can''t unsee. When enlarging the format of the originally published trade paperback/comic (which I''m sure initially goes through various levels of visual inspection and editing), I''m only assuming that the original comic was enlarged to fit the dimensions of the Absolute Edition Format. What I mean by this is that in a trade format, you''ll experience the images as crisp and well defined. This trade format was adapted to the Absolute format. Because the comic appears to have been enlarged, the images are slightly fuzzy and lacking definition.

Pulling back the comic away from your face, as if seeing it in a smaller format, the images look better. The speech bubbles, which are formatted to the larger size format appear just as they would in the trade. I feel that the original illustrations, if they are physical, should have been recaptured to match the resolution of the speech bubbles.

Maybe this is just a consequence of Alex Ross''s painting which, when enlarged, looses some of it''s definition, especially in the minute details that scale better in a larger format? Conversely, I did not notice any lack of clarity in The World''s Greatest Super-Heroes, worked on by himself and Paul Dini, when compared side by side with the speech bubbles. That comic though was intentional produced and finished for a large format release.

That said, this format and presentation is obviously vastly superior to my original trade that I own, so I''ll take what I can get, and maybe I''m just seeing things. Still, kind of like watching a DVD on a bluray player, the image quality is sharpened but lacking in comparison to the text.

Otherwise, this is a prestige work that deserves to be on every comic reader''s bookshelf. The story is unmatched and presentation one of a kind. Should be enjoyed with a nice beer or wine. (Now that I''m older, at least.)

The storyline in this was awesome I kept reading it every chance I got since I had it delivered. I always heard about the kingdom come comic and saw the reviews for it on YouTube but I wanted to know for myself and it lived up to every expectation to the lore of the dc universe and its characters development the realism in this was breath taking. It gave me a chance to see the greatest heroes have sides we never seen before and how the world is changing around them. Thank you to the publishers and to Mark waid and Alex Ross for creating such a blockbuster storytelling. It was definitely worth waiting for.
